Stag Do Albufeira: The Honest Guide (2026)
Better quality than Benidorm, more expensive on drinks, and genuinely beautiful. The Algarve stag do where you can choose your own experience.
Albufeira is what happens when a beautiful part of Europe decides to accommodate the British stag do market without entirely surrendering to it. The Algarve is genuinely one of the more attractive coastlines in Europe. Albufeira sits within it, has a proper British-facing strip with bars and clubs built around groups like yours, and also has an old town and surrounding area where the restaurants are Portuguese, the wine is local, and the experience feels nothing like a stag do destination.
The choice of which version of Albufeira you spend your time in is yours to make. That is what makes it different from Benidorm, where finding a traditional Spanish bar in the main stag do areas requires genuine effort. In Albufeira you can lean fully into the British strip or genuinely step away from it. Most groups end up doing both, which is the right answer.
Why Albufeira Works for a Stag Do
Albufeira works because it combines the convenience and familiarity of a British-catering resort with the quality and setting of the Algarve. The beaches are excellent in a way that Benidorm's are not. The old town has genuine character. The food, when you go to the right places, is significantly better than anything available in Benidorm's stag do areas.
The trade-off is cost. A beer costs £5-7 on the Strip compared to £2-4 in Benidorm. That difference compounds significantly over three nights with a group running a shared kitty. The accommodation and food costs are similarly higher. Albufeira is the better quality option but it costs noticeably more than Benidorm, and groups need to go in with that expectation rather than assuming Portugal will be as cheap as Spain's Costa Blanca.
It is still significantly cheaper than Amsterdam or Ibiza. The value proposition is real, just not quite as stark as some guides suggest.
Getting There
Flights from most UK airports to Faro Airport run £100-180 return. Faro is the main Algarve airport and is about 40 minutes by transfer from Albufeira. Ryanair, easyJet, and Jet2 all operate routes from multiple UK departure points.
Pre-book the transfer from Faro to Albufeira. A shared minibus costs around £15-20 per person each way and is significantly cheaper than taxis for a group. Several operators run direct transfers to the resort.
Book flights early for July and August. The Algarve is one of the most popular summer destinations for UK travellers and prices rise quickly.
Where to Stay
Albufeira has two distinct accommodation areas. The old town is the historic centre on the clifftop, quieter and more characterful. The Strip area (Avenida Sa Carneiro and the surrounding streets) is where most of the nightlife is and where most stag groups stay.
For a stag do, staying near the Strip makes the most practical sense. Hotels in that area run £80-120 per room per night in summer 2026. Self-catering apartments are a popular option for groups and can work out cheaper than hotels.
Book well in advance for July and August. Albufeira fills up and decent accommodation at reasonable prices disappears months ahead of peak season.

The Strip
The Strip in Albufeira is the British-facing nightlife area and does what it does well. Bars, clubs, cheap shots, music. It is less relentlessly English than Benidorm's main drag and has more variety, but it is still clearly designed for UK groups and operates accordingly.
The drinks are more expensive than Benidorm but the quality is generally a step up. Bars compete for business with deals and promotions but not quite at the frantic pitch of the Benidorm Strip.
The Old Town
The old town, a short walk or taxi ride from the Strip, is where Albufeira gets genuinely interesting. Traditional Portuguese restaurants, local bars, a different pace entirely. The clifftop location gives views over the beach that are genuinely impressive and the architecture of the old streets is a world away from the Strip.
For a group dinner on one of the nights, the old town is the right answer. Grilled fish, local wine, proper Portuguese food at prices that are reasonable rather than tourist-inflated.
One specific note on breakfast: if anyone in the group wants a proper fry-up in the morning, stick to the English-facing cafes rather than experimenting with the more traditionally Portuguese options. The Portuguese breakfast involves sweet white bread and a style of bacon that is quite different to what comes out of a British kitchen. This is not a criticism of Portuguese food, which is excellent. It is a practical warning for anyone approaching the first morning of a stag do weekend in a fragile condition and hoping for something familiar.
The Beaches
The beaches around Albufeira are the Algarve's strongest card and one of the main reasons the destination justifies the extra cost over Benidorm.
Praia dos Pescadores (Fisherman's Beach) sits in the old town and is the closest to the centre. Praia da Oura is near the Strip and is the main beach for most groups. Both are backed by the distinctive orange sandstone cliffs that define the Algarve coastline.
Watersports are available on most beaches. Jet skis, banana boats, parasailing. Costs are similar to Benidorm at £30-55 per person.
What a Night Out Looks Like
The Strip gets going around 10pm and runs until the early hours. The concentration of bars means a group can move between venues easily without covering much ground.
Bar Joseph and the surrounding streets are the heart of the action. Kiss Club is the main large-format club and handles stag groups well. Several rooftop bars offer views over the resort and are worth stopping at earlier in the evening before the main venues fill up.
The atmosphere is lively without being as intense as Benidorm at full Friday night pace. The mix of British groups and other European visitors gives the Strip a slightly more varied feel than Benidorm's almost exclusively British crowd.

Based on 2026 prices for a group of 8 on a long weekend (Thursday to Sunday):
| Item | Total (group of 8) | Per person |
|---|---|---|
| Flights (return, UK) | £800-1,440 | £100-180 |
| Hotel (3 nights, 4 rooms) | £1,280-1,920 | £160-240 |

| Beach activities | £240-400 | £30-50 |
| Total | £3,760-5,840 | £470-730 |
Albufeira sits between Benidorm and Amsterdam on cost. The flights and accommodation are the main variables. Booked well in advance in May or June rather than July or August, the costs come in at the lower end of that range.
The drinks budget is higher than Benidorm at £90-140 per person over three nights, reflecting the £5-7 per beer pricing on the Strip. This is the most significant practical difference between the two destinations from a budget perspective.
Albufeira Honestly: What to Expect
Albufeira is better quality than Benidorm and costs more. That sentence covers most of what you need to know before making the decision between the two.
The Algarve is genuinely beautiful and that beauty extends to Albufeira in a way that Benidorm cannot claim. The old town, the beaches, the clifftop views. The food when you go to the right places. The fact that you can spend an entire evening in genuinely Portuguese bars and restaurants rather than spending the whole trip in places designed for British groups.
For groups where budget is the absolute priority, Benidorm delivers more for the money. For groups that want the stag do experience in a setting that they would actually want to come back to on a proper holiday, Albufeira is the better answer.
